Piano
Alexander Schmalcz received his earliest
musical tuition as a member of the Dresdner Kreuzchor. This
was followed by studies at the Musikhochschule Dresden, the
Utrechts Conservatorium and the Guildhall School of Music
& Drama where his teachers were Iain Burnside and Graham
Johnson. The pianist’s accolades include the Gerald
Moore Award of 1996 and the Megan Foster Accompanist Prize.
As an active chamber musician his piano trio also won the
Nederlands Impresariaat Competition.
Alexander Schmalcz tours internationally as a song accompanist
and performs at such festivals as Schubertiade Schwarzenberg,
Salzburger Festspiele, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival,
Schwetzinger Festspiele, Tanglewood Festival and Prague Spring.
His regular appearances include at major venues such as Wigmore
Hall London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wiener Musikverein,
Berliner Philharmonie, Leipziger Gewandhaus, Kölner Philharmonie,
Théâtre du Chatelet, Théâtre de
la Monnaie Bruxelles, Royal Opera House London, Kennedy Center
Washington D. C., Tokyo Opera City Hall and Frauenkirche Dresden.
The pianist enjoys a close collaboration with many distinguished
singers such as Grace Bumbry, Peter Schreier, Matthias Goerne,
Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Stephan Genz, Eva Mei, Christiane Oelze,
Chen Reiss and Stephan Loges and has worked with instrumentalists
including Albrecht Mayer, Dmitri Ashkenazy and the Petersen
Quartet.
The artist records for various CD labels and gives broadcasts
for the BBC, German. Japanese and Dutch radio stations. As
the pianist of Matthias Goerne he has recorded a CD with songs
by Franz Schubert for Harmonia Mundi. OehmsClassics have issued
several discs of songs by Mozart, Zilcher, Schubert, Liszt
and Wagner.
Alexander Schmalcz has taught at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule
in Düsseldorf since 1999 and continues to give highly
acclaimed master classes all over the world.
