Matthias Hartmann

Matthias Hartmann was born in Osnabrück/Germany. He passed his post-graduate internship in direction at the Berlin “Schiller-Theater” and at the Kiel Theater. 

In 1990 he became Artistic Director and Producer at the State Theater of the Lower Saxony in Hannover. In 1993 he moved to the Bavarian State Drama Theater in Munich, where he had been working until 1999. At the same time, he had been directing performances at the Schauspielhaus Theater in Hamburg and at the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 2000 – 2005, Matthias Harmann had been the leader of the Drama Theater in Bochum. In 2005 he became director of the Zurich Drama Theater and from 2009 until 2014 he was the Artistic Director of the Burgtheater in Vienna. 

Since 2003 he had produced many opera productions such as The Bartered Bride, The Valley, Carmen, Elektra, The Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District or Mathis der Maler at the Opera Houses in Paris, Vienna and Zurich.   

In 2010, Matthias Hartmann was awarded with a special Johann Nestroy Prize for his open rehearsals of “War and Peace.”
