Karoline Gruber

 

Karoline Gruber was born in Austria and studied theater and musicology, art history and philosophy at the University of Vienna.

Her productions have taken her to the world's most prestigious opera houses, such as the Hamburg State Opera (L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Nabucco, Giulio Cesare, Lear, Die tote Stadt), the Vienna State Opera (Der Spieler, Le Villi), the Berlin State Opera (Il mondo della luna), the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf (Platée, Don Giovanni) as well as to the Semperoper Dresden, the Nikikai Opera Tokyo, the Leipzig Opera, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, the Cologne Opera or the Aalto Theater Essen.

Other productions include Cleofide (J. A. Hasse), Gianni Schicchi, Salome, The Tale of the Green Serpent (E. Nunes), La traviata, Carmen, La Bohème, Rigoletto, Lohengrin, The Rake's Progress, Dialogues des Carmélites and many others. 

From 2014 to 2020, she was professor of "Music Dramatic Presentation - Scenic" at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and in 2020 moved to Leipzig as head of the Opera School at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy of Music and Theater.

In 2015 she staged "Die Tote Stadt" by E. W. Korngold at the Hamburg State Opera, followed by "Ariadne auf Naxos" by R. Strauss at the Nikikai Opera Tokyo in 2016 and "Der Spieler" by S. Prokofiev at the Vienna State Opera in 2017, all works again together with conductor Simone Young. In August 2021, Nikikai Opera Tokyo hosted her production of Alban Berg's opera "Lulu", which will be revived in 2025/26 due to its great success.
